My dear motherWe were inspected by the King on Friday. Rather an honour as the Battalion was picked out to represent the 5th Brigade. It poured with rain all day. We marched 7 miles there -- the King passed down the line with some Generals and about 3 minutes afterwards fell off his horse. Our doctor rushed up but was too late -- bad luck. Well then we marched back again wet to the skin. The Div Band accompanied the Bn back.We are going up to the trenches on Tuesday. As bombing Off I shall probably get rather a rotten time in these trenches as in some places the Huns are only 10 yds away.Hope for leave in a fortnight.Your loving son Tom
