Mr Hugh C Craig OH 1959-1964
Thursday 06 July 2023
Hugh Cameron Craig “LAD” Hugh died in Brazil on Thursday 6 July 2023 having been taken into hospital 3 days earlier. At school he was a member of School House becoming a house monitor and then a school monitor during his last year. He was not one you would describe as an academic as his talents lay elsewhere. On the sporting front he was a valued member of 1st XV who beat Christ College, Brecon away in November 1963. Also, as Captain of Boats for the 1964 season he was a member of 1st VIII crew who won the Hereford Rowing Club Challenge Vase in June 1964 at the Hereford Schools Regatta. If my memory serves me correctly this Vase was big and was filled and emptied more than once in the Lichfield Vaults, Church Street to celebrate. Also, he was an officer in the Schools CCF through which he achieved the Gold Standard in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and a trip to Buckingham Palace to receive his certificate from The Duke. After leaving school he joined English Electric in Stafford as an apprentice in electrical engineering. Subsequent employment was with GEC within the heavy electrical distribution industry in the UK. He keep up his interest in playing rugby both on and off the park in Stafford and later the Manchester area. Transfer of employment to Bogota, Columbia in the 1970s led him to take up residence in South America with a variety of employments again all within the heavy electrical distribution industry. He was self-taught Portugese and so became useful as a translator. Having become a great grandfather last year he leaves a large loving family in Brazil. As children, Hugh my brother and I got into all sorts of scraps but being slightly older than me he would generally take the blame ! Written by Angus Craig
