Anthony Weston, well-known for his trademark bowler hats and waistcoat suits, retired last week, exactly 50 years after his taking his first job in law.

The 74-year-old, born and raised in Hereford, was given the traditional gift of a paperweight from Chris Hillyard, chairman of the bench at Hereford Magistrates Court, during a surprise ceremony on his last day and received a round of applause as he left the courtroom.

“I was almost embarrassed by how kind everyone was,” said Anthony. “I’ve had a decent career with its ups and downs.

“I felt, after half a century, it was the right time to stop. I have a wonderful wife of 45 years, Rosemary, with whom I hope to spend more time. I shall take life a little slower.”

Life out of the courtroom will be no less busy for Anthony, a committed Baptist and lay preacher. “I will increase my church work,” he said.

“I will continue to take services at weekends and I may write something, perhaps some articles for theological publications.” “I will continue to take services at weekends and I may write something, perhaps some articles for theological publications.”

He is also hoping to get more involved in Victory Outreach UK, a charity to rehabilitate people leaving prison.

A former Hereford Cathedral School student, a Cambridge graduate and Mensa member, Anthony has worked in Hereford for 40 years and, for the past three, as a consultant for Caldicott Gallimore Solicitors based in Commercial Street.

“Anthony’s knowledge and experience has been invaluable,” said partner Emily Gourley. “There’s nothing he doesn’t know and he will go to great lengths to help others.

"He will be missed more than we can say."
