Mr Michael Moreton OH 1942-1949
Monday 20 November 2023
The Club has been informed of the death of Michael Moreton.

We are sad to announce the death of Michael P Moreton (OH 1942-49) aged 91. Michael also attended the Prep School (1938-42). Michael was the second son of Canon Moreton of Hereford.

Whilst at HCS Michael was athletic, competing in field and track events as well as rowing. In 1949 Michael captained the School’s Coxed Fours to success winning the Public Schools Challenge Cup at Marlow Regatta.

In his last year at HCS, Michael was Head of West House, Captain of Boats and Captain of Athletics, as well as a Gilbert Librarian and Hon Treasurer of the Chess Club. His lifelong passion for Bellringing was evident as he was Master of the Society of Change Ringers.

Michael’s interest in school rowing continued and the HCS Boat Club meaning that the Club still use a scull donated by Michael, which bears his name.

Michael was committed member of the Old Herefordian community and will be remembered by many who attended events in Hereford and London. Even in his later years Michael had a keen sense of fun, and a raft of stories and jokes with which to beguile young and old.

Michael’s funeral will be held at ST. PETER’S C of E CHURCH, St. Peter’s Road, South Croydon on Wednesday 13th December at 12.30pm

As Michael was a bell ringer at Westminster Abbey he has the privilege of lying in the Abbey the night before his funeral.
