Christopher J Williams OH 1954-1962
Sunday 02 July 2017
Christopher Williams joined the school in 1954 as a boarder in Deanery, but later became a dayboy in West House. On leaving school in 1962 he went to Bangor University where he took a degree in English followed by a Diploma in Archive Administration. He then pursued a career in Archives, initially working in Derbyshire before moving to north-east Wales and eventually becoming the County Archivist for Clwyd. Marrying in 1982, he had two sons and was a devoted father. Christopher loved to delve into the archives and conducted historical research into a wide variety of topics, particularly in the field of metal mining in north Wales. He wrote and co-wrote many publications particularly related to the history of the mining industry, and also lectured at universities on archive administration. Living near Wrexham, he was very active in local historical societies and wrote on many aspects of local history. But he had many interests beyond the world of archives, and regularly enjoyed a pint with friends in his local pub – although even there his love of history crept in, and the pub owners commissioned him to research and write the pub’s history. He died on 2 July 2017 of prostate cancer, aged 73, sadly missed by family and friends. By Tim (TC) Williams OH 1957-1964
