8/1/16My dear RobertVery many thanks for your letter and congrats. I'm afraid I had not got time to look through the paper that day, but somebody pointed our battalions name to me.The days we spend now are nothing to laugh at. The hell of a shelling goes on from both sides. We held some trenches about six days ago and got them pretty well blown in in two days and now we have some in for 8 or 9 days straight off. The Boch blew up a couple of mines just before we came in and blow one up last night and this cruel[??] shelling goes on every day. They got one right through our Coy headquarters this morning and in the last trenches we were in I had all my kit buried in my dugout. Yours Tom
